The Computer Crimes and Electronic Evidence Unit is comprised of state and local police officers, along with professional forensic examiners.  The Unit conducts criminal investigations, assists other law enforcement agencies, provides training and performs forensic analysis of electronic evidence.  During the year, the Unit experienced a 24% increase in the number of cases handled, 816 compared to 656 the previous year.  Fully 60% of the cases involved child pornography – either a task force investigation, assistance to another agency or examination of evidence.


During the past year, requests for services by type of crime are as follows:

Child Pornography 60%
Larceny/Fraud 10%
Threatening/Harassment     5%
Enticement of a Minor   3%
Sexual Assault    4%
Murder/Suicide
1%
All other 17%

The Unit is one of forty-five states that is a member of ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) Connecticut’s Task Force also covers Rhode Island.  As part of this Task Force, Connecticut is a recipient of Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force funding from the United States Department of Justice, the Unit has become a national leader in the fight against online child sexual exploitation.  60 – 70% of the case load involved child victims.
